Happy New Year for 2010

The PPA wishes you all the best for the new year

We hope to be continuing with the PPA courses throughout the year and will keep you updated. Additionally we hope the new website provided by the CSP will be up and running by the end of the year. This gives exciting opportunities to have a membership area and we hope to be able to provide e. Journals within this. I will keep you updated with regards to this.

I have attached a reminder for the PPA courses in the North and South this January and a flyer for the ICSP congress at Montreal.

Additionally, an interesting website for relaxation may be of interest. Here is the link for your perusal. Happy new year.

Pain: Breaking through the barrier

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer has published a report summarising the problems with pain management in the UK. A copy is attached. Here is some of his statement about its release:

"Pain is too big a problem to ignore. Yet it seems we have not been paying it enough attention. Patients say they are rarely asked about their pain by doctors or nurses. When they are asked, the treatment they receive is often inadequate. Many patients with pain are not getting any medical help whatsoever.

Modern pain treatment can allow people with chronic pain to get their lives back. Medication is an important part of this. Other treatments such as electrical stimulation, acupuncture and psychological methods can be important as well. Patients can learn from professionals, and from other patients, how to recover.

These services and more should come together in a modern multi-professional pain service. This has been shown to make a big difference to patients' lives. Unfortunately, services are variable around the country - both in primary and hospital care. Only 14% of sufferers have seen a pain specialist. In fact, there is only one full-time pain specialist for every 32, 000 people with pain."

For the first time, an article from PPA News is available online.

This is for two reasons:

1. Professor Lederman's stimulating article merits the international readership which the PPA Website offers

ARMA

PPA members will be interested to find out about the work of ARMA, which is the umbrella organisation for the UK musculoskeletal community. ARMA have developed standards of care for a range of painful conditions, firmly based on the experiences of people living with the musculoskeletal conditions, which have been reviewed and endorsed by a range of user groups and professional organisations. For full details of the standards and the endorsing organisations, please visit ARMA's website www.arma.uk.net.

The standards are based on three themes:
. access to information, support and knowledge that optimise musculoskeletal health for everyone and enable self-management
  • access to the right services that enable early assessment and management
  • access to ongoing and responsive treatment and support

Musculoskeletal Services Framework

The new national MSF has now been launched, and is available from:

http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_4138413

How will it affect the provision of physiotherapy services, and how will it affect the quality of care delivered for NHS patients? If you are a member of the interactive Chartered Society of Physiotherapy website, you could start a discussion with your physiotherapy colleagues about this and any other important issues which affect the provision of treatment for patients with musculoskeletal pain.
